Your current job might not exist in 10 years...
Securing the future of my career one step at a time.
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail” is a saying I love that sums up why I have decided to start thinking about what the future of my career could look like. Although I’ve stopped obsessing over what my life and career ‘should’ look like in 10 years time, I still think it’s important to make plans for the future.
The average UK retirement age is 65🥲so yep we have a long way to go!
Here are 3 steps I’m currently taking to secure the future of my career and to make sure I still have my desired job in 10 years time and you can too:
Stay trendy in your field: It’s pretty much impossible to keep up with a field where you have no clue of what’s going on beyond your day to day tasks. When you know where things are heading, you can make a head start by being one of the first to gain the new skills and qualifications before everyone else does. I’m personally in the world of compliance so I became a member of the ICA which is the main compliance professional body, where I regularly keep up to date with industry news, trends and courses. I recommend finding the equivalent in your field and doing the same.
Embrace continuous learning: Learning new and relevant skills and expertise makes you essential to a company and industry and let’s be honest, it’s much better when someone else is paying for you to add to your skills and gain qualifications and certifications. So if your employer offers you the chance to take a course, qualification, etc take it! Even if they don’t offer, ASK! If neither of these apply to you (e.g you’re a contractor) then it’s definitely worth investing in yourself.
Build skills outside of your ‘normal job’: Hear me out… Although we are all 9 to 5 girlies here, it’s pretty clear that there is a cap on how much we can earn in our 9 to 5 jobs even when you’re on top of your game. Gaining additional skills outside of work has been a game changer for me not only financially but also in terms of providing me with options when it comes to career paths. Having a form of “side hustle” that you are serious about can teach you so many new skills that won’t ever get old like sales and marketing which are integral to any company regardless of any tech advancements. To keep this short, I’ll go into further details about what these skills are in a future newsletter so be sure to stay tuned and speak soon!
