I used to cringe at the thought of the word ‘networking.'
Me in a room full of people in suits, awkwardly forcing conversation? - No thanks!
But if there’s anything I’ve learned throughout my career journey so far, it's that nothing beats having a solid network around you and that if I could do it - anyone can.
Believe me, at least 2 of my 4 corporate jobs so far, would have slipped through my fingers - without networking.
So, when I hear from people that networking feels like an impossible mountain to climb, I get it—because once upon a time, I felt the same.
But let’s change that.
First things first, let's not network just for the sake of it. Set clear, strategic goals:
Are you trying to break into a new industry?
Climb to a higher role?
Or are you hunting for a mentor?
Knowing your 'why' sharpens your focus, helping you network with the right people for your goals.
What To Say When Networking Online?
Start by connecting in online communities specific to your industry and don't be shy on LinkedIn. You can easily reach out to anyone for a chat using the following messaging template I created for you:
“Hi [Name],
I came across your profile and was impressed by your work in [specific area/industry]. As someone interested in [related field/goal], I’d love to connect and learn more about your journey.
Looking forward to connecting!
Best regards,
[Your Name]”
Networking In-Person
Let me challenge you, the next time you’re attending an event where you’d like to network - go by yourself! I’ve found this to be very effective. You’ll connect with way more people and have more conversations, since you don't have the crutch of a friend to lean on.
This forces you to come out of your shell especially if you’re on the shy side.
Industry conferences and networking events are gold mines and remember to be yourself in these settings; authenticity leads to genuine connections, and you might even make a friend or two.
Think of What You Might Have to Offer
Networking becomes a lot easier when you have something to offer. Before asking for a favour, think of what you might have to offer.
Doesn’t have to be anything too fancy.
Can you introduce them to someone else in your network?
Share a resource?
Offer your skills?
Offer your time?
Acts of generosity build a foundation of reciprocity and trust - always remember that networking is not always a quick fix, it is a longer game.
Also, be curious about the other person, listen intently. Try to listen more than you speak.
Don’t Forget to Follow up
This is something I could probably be better at. But it's crucial to follow up with your new connections. A simple message reminding them of your conversation can keep the relationship going. Stay connected on social media and stay in touch
Who to Network With?
Networking can happen anywhere and with anyone — friends of friends, colleagues, even ex-coworkers, a stranger on LinkedIn in the field you’ve been trying to get into? It’s about building connections that support both your growth and the success of others.
Remember, we all need each other. There is no goal of mine that I have achieved solely by myself without the help and input of others around me.
Networking might just be the key to unlocking new opportunities for you.
